Poker Run for St Vincent's Hospital

I worry about everything, but especially about the weather. I hate rain suitsand riding in the rain and avoid it when I can. The entire week leading up to the first annual Poker Run for St. Vincent's Hospital was forecasted with rain, and lots of it. All day long at work I would regularly check the Weather Network's web site and lament all those dark cloud and rain symbols. After work I would check the local newscasts and get more of the same. That is, until the day before the run when those depressing clouds were replaced with a cheerful, sunglass-bearing sun. I was ecstatic!

So it was with some surprise that I woke on the morning of the run to be greeted by a cold drizzle outside my bedroom window. Surely it wouldn't last long. Around 8:30, just as I prepared to unpack the dreaded rain suit, I noticed that the rain had stopped. It was only 8°C but I couldn't have been happier. I roared out of the garage and down the highway in great spirits hoping that others, too, would be doing the same. I arrived at Freedom HD and was thrilled to see that the cold and damp morning did not prevent at least another dozen riders there already from attending this inaugural run.

Registration was quick, and Tim Horton's coffee and donuts were available for all who needed a top-up on their energy prior to departure. I decided I wanted to traverse the route without interruptions from the calls of nature, and so skipped the refreshments and hit the road. I rode a bit on the fast side to keep my mind off the cold. In no time at all I was at the first checkpoint in Merrickville. Three of our cheerful Ladies of HOG bravely manned their picnic table, greeting the riders and punching their poker sheets. As I left them behind I felt a little sorry for them since it seemed colder and damper standing around than actually riding. Bythe second check point the weather had improved significantly, and the clouds were all behind me- probably still over that picnic table. In fact, the closer I got to the last checkpoint and the ride's final destination of St. Vincent's parking lot, the sunnier and warmer it became.
