A Snapshot of the Nineties

January / March / July / September / October

January 1998

Like every January issue of the newsletter, the newly elected executive was announced. Joe B had become a Past Director, and Gerry Johnson became the "Director Forever.". Christie continued as the editor, and all told, thirteen individuals filled twelve chapter positions.

Regular columns included:

  • Editor's Corner - Christie looked back over the past year and realized what a supportive dealer Hurst was to the chapter.

  • Re-Prints - The only submitted article in this issue was a re-print from ABATE revisiting "Group Riding."

The rest of the issue consisted of upcoming events which included the itinerary for the "North-Eastern 'Come Home' Ride route."

March 1998

The newsletter had transformed primarily into a vehicle for announcing events. This is not to say that that was a bad thing; it just had little else to offer. The only submitted article was from the "participation pest" (as she, Catherine H-W, described herself) who wrote to explain how to garner chapter participation points to win prizes.

The position of Public Relations officer had also returned.

Regular columns included:

  • Editor's Corner - Christie wrote about the recent Montreal Bike Show, and looked forward to the new season's rallies.

July 1998

Regular columns included:

  • Editor's Corner - Christie wrote about her disappointment with the US HOG Rally in Milwaukee .

There were five pages of upcoming events.

September 1998

Regular columns included:

  • Editor's Corner - Christie thanked all the contributors to the newsletter and particularly Russ S. She also asked the ladies to take a more active voice in the newsletter. And she reminded everyone of the upcoming "The Great Motorcycle Toy Parade", and the "LOH Scavenger Hunt."

  • Re-Prints - A newspaper clipping from Los Angels about a dog that rode on his master's Harley, and the citation he received for the "unsafe load."

    Harley's model lineup for 1999 (re-printed from ?).

Only one article submitted which offered a counterpoint to the editor's experience in Milwaukee (July 98 issue), and was signed "A Fellow HOG Member" who recommended the editor stay home for the 100th.

There was also a short letter from Russ S via the internet from the Oshawa HOG Rally (the electronic age was truly upon us).

October 1998

The chapter meeting location had been changed to Bobby's Restaurant on Canotek Rd.

Regular columns included:

  • From the Desk of the Director - Gerry J reported to the membership about the chapter's activities and accomplishments over the year.

  • Editor's Corner - Reported on the Toy Run and reminded everyone about the upcoming elections and Christmas Party.

  • LOH News - Rachel B talked about past LOH successes and that the quilt (charity fundraiser) was finally in the process of being raffled.

  • The Minutes of the Previous Meeting

  • Reprints - Two re-prints were included: one came from Deeley Imports, and was a news release regarding Buell's recent breaking of the world land speed record (150.03 mph) in the V-Twin Pushrod 1350cc class at Bonneville.

The other was the "Pointers from the Participation Pest" first found in the March, 1998 chapter newsletter.

A fascinating story about the origins of the chapter's annual Toy Run was submitted by the chapter Historian, Lynn V.
