Bling Bling for the Blast
The Blast is an entry level bike from Buell. Buell is owned by Harley Davidson. Harley Davidsons are rarely left completely stock, so it was only natural to make a few changes to the Blast even before it was delivered, and a few more once it was in our hands.
But in no way were we going to go hog wild. According to our sources, the Blast has built a solid reputation as a reliable bike from model year 2003 and on, and we meant to keep it that way. In fact, we were going to leave the engine well enough alone as it was. However, thanks to the EPA, we were going to have to help the big single breathe a little easier by doing something called "Paying the Harley Tax." This involves nothing more than an improved air filter, a performance exhaust, jetting of the carb, and a few holes in the air box. Good for a few HP and a much better running bike overall.
Someone once described the Blast as the VW Beetle (the old ones) of the motorcycle world, and I couldn't agree more. It is an unpretentious fun bike that handles well and is fast enough to easily keep ahead of urban traffic, while on the highway it will maintain 70 mph all day long. Add gas, keep an eye on the oil and tires, and have fun. Few people will know what it is, but most will agree that it is a cool little bike.
Keeping in mind that this bike was purchased to introduce Gail to two wheeling and that she very likely will want something bigger within a few years, the changes were limited to the practical and affordable. Here is what has been done so far.

Headlamp and CityX Hand Guards We upgraded the seal beam with HD's latest halogen headlight and added on the hand guards from Buell's CityX model. |

Pro Pipe
Good power and sound, though not the lightest. Well built and doesn't have fibre packing to blow out. Should last "forever." |
 |
Crank Case Breather
We rerouted the breather hose from the air cleaner to the rear of the bike, terminating with a little filter (arrow). This means no more air cleaner mess; plus, it reduces engine carbon build-up.

Superbike Bars
Inexpensive and better looking than the stock mini-apes. They are both wider and lower and just clear the tank cover in full lock.

Buell Traction Grips
We destroyed the originals while changing the handlebars; these are more comfortable. Also shown, a view of the handguards from the rider's perspective.
